Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens, and Frances Walsh had a truly daunting task. For those few people who have not, allow me to educate you.

LORD OF RINGS FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING MOVIE

The Movie Those who have seen The Fellowship of the Ring know how great the movie is. Note: All movie captures in this review may be clicked on to view an 853x480 high-res capture. To not waste anymore time, lets just dive on into the review of this excellent movie, which begins on page two. There are also the television specials, but putting those web featurettes and trailers on the disc brings back memories of anticipating the movie, and for a big fan that's something cool to have.

In the extras you not only get the trailers and the best TV spots, but you also get the featurettes that the official LOTR site ran over the year before the movie came out.

This set feels like an archive of the original theatrical release. In addition to featuring one of the best audio/video presentations of any DVD so far this year, the disc is the only way to get the theatrical cut of the film we all fell in love with, and the extras on this set are completely different than the ones that will be on the four-disc extended cut in November. But, true fans will not want to pass up this two-disc release. You can see a small preview of that edition on disc two of this set. In November, New Line will release an extended cut of the film that includes roughly thirty minutes of additional footage. This initial release of The Fellowship of the Ring is the 178-minute theatrical cut. The Two Towers is still about four and a half months away, but Fellowship of the Ring is finally here on DVD so all of us freaks can watch it on a continuous loop until December 18.

But, I knew that it would be another year until the second installment, and I knew that the next year would be a torturous wait. So, after three hours in that giant IMAX auditorium on that cold December night I was fully ready to sit there another six hours to see both The Two Towers and Return of the King right then. The Hobbit effects worked, the score was very fitting, and the whole thing seemed perfect. New Line decided to torment viewers even more by then showing five minutes of footage from both The Two Towers and Return of the King, which ended with a shot of Frodo and Sam at the Cracks of Doom right as Frodo is about to toss in the Ring… Nonetheless, the footage renewed our hopes that Fellowship wouldn't be a disaster. The Moria sequence was complete from Balin's Tomb all the way up to the first reveal of the Balrog's head. It featured a montage of never-before-seen footage and dialog leading up to the Moria sequence where for the first time we were able to see fully complete effects sequences and listen to Howard Shore's completed score. Earlier that year, we had the chance to view the twenty minutes of footage that New Line cut together for the Cannes' Film Festival. From the original Internet preview oh so long ago, it had been a torturous wait that was made even worse a few short months before the premiere of the film. After a long wait in line I finally got to my seat in the Sony Metreon IMAX Theater in downtown San Francisco to witness what many critics had claimed to be impossible for almost fifty years. That was until 12:01am on December 19, 2001. For the longest time, my favorite film was Spielberg's E.T.
